Our Review:

The League Review November 2018

First launched in 2015, The League Dating app was made because of CEO and Founder Amanda Bradford's frustration over her own online dating experience. Bradford wanted to streamline the online dating world in a sense of meeting people intelligently by rebranding the idea of being "picky" to "self-aware."

A dating app that exclusively targets career-oriented, ambitious people who most likely hail from an Ivy League school provides up and coming CEOs with matches they are too busy changing the world to look for.

Amidst the controversies of being branded as "elitist" and perpetuating racism, we take a crack at The League to investigate what's under the shiny, bright surface. To know more about the rigorous registration process and the world of career-driven young professionals, read our review of the League below.

Can Your Net Get Even Smaller?

  • Linking your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts is mandatory for verification purposes
  • The more friends and connections you have on Facebook and LinkedIn, the more likely you'd be approved to join The League
  • There are over 100,000 people on the waiting list in US alone
  • You can pay high-priced membership fees to bypass Facebook and LinkedIn steps
  • You are still subject to The League's approval process even if you already paid for your membership
The League Registration

The League lends itself to be quite the exclusive club with its rigorous registration process. Not everybody can get in, only the chosen ones can. The app's intense screening of its members furthermore cements its reputation as the world's most exclusive dating app. Made by the elite for the elite, being approved by The League can also equate to a status symbol. After all, if you are able to get in the private club full of successful people, doesn't that make you one as well? In an app where credentials is a commodity, just how tough is signing up on this site can be?

For starters, you can't bypass the Facebook or LinkedIn step unless you pay a ton of money to be a member. You must link your social media accounts to verify your identity.

Linking these accounts does not automatically mean that you are in. Oh no, you will still be placed on the waitlist. The League assesses your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts to see if you are the right fit for their circle. The more friends and connections you have, the more chances you have of being approved. Your status such as education, profession, and social circle will be scrutinized as well.

Speaking of the waitlist, have we mentioned that in the United States alone, there are over 100,000 people on the waitlist? Yes, this app has an extremely long line of people vying to get in. It almost feels like a competition, almost. You may have the credentials but so do other people. Everyone must get in line or buy their way in.

The League offers steep membership fees where you can skip linking in social media accounts and have your application processed within the same day.

However, if somehow, the gods of the online dating community have heard your prayer and a member already behind the velvet rope has given you an endorsement, you can be sure to have a slightly easier time getting in.

Think of it this way, if they can pay an exorbitant amount of money for an elite dating app, maybe The League already trusts them enough to make endorsements fit for the club.

The Lucky Ones

  • HD photos increase your chances of getting approved
  • The app automatically syncs in employment and education information from linked social media accounts
  • Editing or hiding your job is only available for League Members
  • You can upload up to six photos
  • Tight security is enforced in the app to avoid fake accounts and scams
The League Profile

If against all odds you had been deemed fit to enter The League, it is now time to build your profile. Aside from the photos on your social media accounts, you may upload up to six photos on your profile. Having HD, studio-quality photos is a must in this dating app. Say goodbye to blurry, pixelated selfies and get ready for photos taken by iPhone and DSLR cameras. After all, it poses as the Harvard of dating apps; thus requiring only the best for the best.

The information a standard League profile asks is the same as that of any dating site. You can fill out basic information such as height, ethnicity, location, religion, and interests. Writing a short bio for a more personal touch is highly recommended, too.

However, one issue this dating app can't seem to shake off is it requiring the members to submit their ethnicity as part of profile information. Yes, you heard that right. Ethnicity must be disclosed. For a dating app that supposedly views the online dating community through a feminist lens, having ethnicity as mandatory information can be a few steps backward, rather than forward. But more on that tight spot later.

To protect its members from fakes and scams, the app enforces a tight security that's quite difficult to bypass. You must link your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts where your education and profession information will be assessed. This also works as prevention from lying about personal information. To edit or hide your job, you must upgrade to become a League Member and pay a monthly fee.

How to Connect with the Lucky Ones

  • You will only get a limited number of matches per day
  • Use search filters to narrow down your matches to your preference
  • There are League Groups where you can meet friends you can hang out with in real life
  • You can purchase League Tickets to get more matches and speed up the process
  • Female members outnumber men with 2:1 ratio
The League Search

Despite all the jazz and the controversies surrounding The League, the main premise of the app is to create perfect matches for career-driven individuals who have no time to deal with people that are less driven than them. They wanted the perfect partners who would understand their drive, passion, and ambition with the intelligence to match. As Bradford would say, this app is created to match power couples.

With that in mind, the app has been made to be particularly selective in order to provide driven individuals with equally or even more passionate partners. With their rigorous vetting process, only a few are granted access which ultimately leads to a lesser number of members to be matched with.

You will only get a limited number of matches per day. If these few matches do not suit your preference, you can opt to purchase League Tickets. How do these tickets work? These tickets speed up the entire matching process by providing you with an extra batch of prospects to scout.

To further optimize your League experience, you can opt to become a member by paying the membership fees. To have more daily matches and see read receipts, you must pay the price of being a League Member or a League Owner. Being a member or an owner grants you access to the app's special features such as ticket allotment, VIP passes, etc.

Joining League Groups is also a highlight feature. A League Group is where the elites go to gather and chill out. They can interact within these groups, arrange a hang, and meet in real life. Events are commonly organized within these groups.

One of the famous groups on this site is the one made by the CEO, Bradford, herself. She created a group where women can talk, share opinions, and knowledge on freezing their eggs. Since some of the hot topics usually thrown at successful and ambitious women professionals are choosing between love and career, and outrunning the biological clock,  this is a space where women can comfortably talk about their opinions regarding those matters.

The most common League Groups are named, “Nantucketers,” “Hamptons Crew,” “Brunch Lovers,” “Golf Buddies,” “Yacht Week,” and “World Travelers & Road Warriors,” which more or less says about what kind of people hang around here.

If these features entice you and the accompanying price tags are reasonable enough for your pockets, investing in this app can surely make the League experience all the more enjoyable.

Special Features

League Tickets

With the limited number of members, prospective matches can also be scarce. To fully maximize the matching services this site offers, you may purchase League Tickets to broaden your selections amongst the cream of the crop, the brightest among the brightest. Although this feature also comes with a steep price tag, the tickets can really help you find and select a suitable partner for yourself.

Of course, after the careful vetting of its members--nothing but the best and the brightest for The League--the tearful parting of ways between your wallet and your money, unfortunately, does not end there. You still have to pay to become a member. Upgrading to League Membership entitles you to perks such as being granted free League Tickets, VIP passes, and read receipts.

League Owner

If after all that, you still have enough cash to burn and invest in this exclusive app, you can even upgrade to League Ownership. What does that entitle you to? For a higher price, you get to have access to all membership perks plus expedited entry, daily stats, read receipts, access to groups, and VIP passes.

The League's business model runs on the premium model where they create awesome features. The only catch is, these features will cost you. In a way, these features further strengthen the "eliteness" of this app. Only if you are willing to pay and have the right credentials will you be let in The League.

League Groups

Aiming to foster the feeling of community within this very small circle, The League had created groups wherein their members can form "clubs," talk about their interests, or join in on the conversation about topical things such as stocks, hobbies, and other indulgences.

Here for the Tea

Although the dating app introduces as to a fresh new concept of dating intelligently, the app's take on race and social status might ruffle other people's feathers. Some might see The League's treatment of race to be rather a few steps backward.

The League had been made to cater to people who wanted to have the best partners basing on education and profession. In what Amanda Bradford defends to be as "having high standards," the app sizzles with controversies by making disclosure of ethnicity a requirement.

Now, why does that matter? First, let's start with the entire concept of niche dating sites. Online dating companies have since then been releasing studies that reveal a quantifiable racial bias in the online dating community. Hence, the birth of niche dating sites that cater to race and specific interests. However, for apps like The League, studies still confirm that people of color and minority groups have lower response rates in comparison to its white members.

In the case of The League where ethnicity must be disclosed when other apps don't require it, it certainly puts the elite dating service in the bad light.

How so, you ask? Similar to other well-known dating apps, The League adopted the "swipe right feature" where you can swipe right if the person matched to you passed your taste and swipe left when it is the other way around.

However, here in The League, people being swiped to the left will get downvoted. In the app where rank and status matter, most people who get downvoted are usually people of color.

In retrospect, there are very few non-Caucasian users of this dating app. Although Bradford states that requiring ethnicity data is just meant to help the site be more inclusive, the seemingly lack of diversity in this site begs to differ.

This leads us to the dating app's main controversy: elitism. The dating app is notoriously famous for being hard to get into, further establishing itself as the VIP app for the VIPs. Bradford postulates that The League is rebranding standards when it comes to online dating. Although there is nothing wrong with that per se, what sparked the people into talking is the selection process wherein the app chooses who should get in and who should not. It further reinforces segregation as to why a specific group of people is allowed, but some are not.

  • Has a neat, sleek, and organized design layout

The League App

The app with its high price point definitely does not disappoint. It looks clean, pristine, and expensive. Looking like the MVP of all dating apps out there, The League blows out its competition out the water with its sleek, minimalist design and usage of turquoise, black, white, and gold tones. The fonts used are elegant but still neat. Every button is streamlined to be organized and make the user experience far simpler and intuitive. With over 100,000 downloads, the mobile app is available in both Android and iOS. It is free to download.

Field Test

"I wouldn't have gotten in if it weren't for my friend who gave me the endorsement. With all the hype and the controversies surrounding The League, I am very much excited to try this out myself! What would this expensive app do for me that other cheaper alternatives couldn't? And I find myself sorely disappointed. You see, every feature of this app has a price. There is basically not much use if you are just a guest and not a member. So hurrah! You got in, you are good enough. But if you won't pay, then honestly, honey, you are just wasting your time. What disappointed me, even more, are the lack of diversity. If you are a cisgendered white person, this app might do the trick for you. But if you are far more colorful and have a more diverse taste, then you are better off finding another app--perhaps a cheaper, much more affordable one!" - Manon, 24

Summary

Amidst the whirlwind of controversies, the world's most exclusive dating app still has a very long list of people vying to get in to meet rich, successful, and intelligent people. The League does not project itself as a dating app for the common folk. No, it is targeted for the higher tier of society with a huge emphasis on education and profession.

Getting in The League is notoriously difficult since the app has to approve you first. Even if you do get approved, you will still be placed on the long waiting list with 100,000 other people.

Since the dating app brands itself as the site for people with high standards, it would appear that high standards come with a price with the hefty price tags stamped on each special feature.

For instance, you only get limited matches per day unless you pay for the League Tickets. These tickets broaden the matchmaking process to some degree. To socialize with the elites, you can join groups where you can discuss and organize get-togethers. But in order to do so, you must be a League Member or Owner first.

Indeed, every move you make on this app has a price. For the security of having properly vetted, real people with substantial backgrounds, The League might just be the wingman you need. However, if its exclusivity and shiny exterior intimidate you, you can check out our other much friendlier matchmaking sites here.

FAQ

No, your friends will not be notified. The League is designed to cater to people who want privacy and control over who can view their dating profile. The app won't notify your friends or post on your timeline.

Why does it need so many Facebook permissions?

The League needs photos to create your profile. Other information like current city, hometown, likes, interests, and education are things the app uses to match you more effectively but it can only get this information if you grant the permissions on Facebook.

Will my friends on Facebook ever see my profile?

No. Upon logging in, The League stores your Facebook friends so that you are blocked from your friends. You may see the dating app's Privacy Policy for more information on how they use, disclose, and store your personal information in order to do this.

Is my Facebook username and password safe with this app?

Facebook does not give The League access to your username and password so there is no risk to you. Facebook has a feature called Facebook Connect that lets you use your Facebook profile to login/logout of the dating app without it ever knowing your user credentials. Thus, the app does not have access nor does it store your username and password.

Why is my LinkedIn login also needed?

The League uses LinkedIn to block you from your coworkers (as self-identified on LinkedIn as ‘currently’ working for the same company). They also use it to show your mutual connections, build your profile, and to check if the users are who they claim they are. The app doesn’t have access to any of your contacts nor their email addresses. The app won't email or notify any of your coworkers that you’ve signed up for the dating app.

Does the app have access to my LinkedIn contacts' information?

No. The League only stores your contacts’ names and unique IDs so that they can show them as mutual friends and also block them from you in their matching algorithm. The app does not collect any email address nor can it notify your contacts in any way.

Can people on LinkedIn see that I'm using The League?

No. As mentioned above, the app does not have access to your contacts. The League's core tenet is helping their users keep their work life and personal life separate.

Is my LinkedIn username and password safe with The League?
