A hip and fresh take on the old-fashioned, 90s trend of communicating, Tinychat connects thousands of people from all parts of the globe with its modern revival of video conferencing and chat rooms.
We all knew that chat rooms were all the rage way back when. However, just like all other things, what goes around comes back around. We have seen the resurrection of mom jeans and grunge. Why not chat rooms, too? Tinychat offers just that in a very funky, millennial way with its cool design, sleek, and youth-friendly user interface.
In this in-depth review, we had explored all that Tinychat has to offer in order to know if this site is worth your buck or not. To find out what makes this popular app great, read on our review below!
Signing up on Tinychat is fairly quick and easy. In just a minute, you can already chat with anyone to your heart's content. Although unlike other chat sites wherein you can just input your preferred username and password, Tinychat requires you to create an account first.
Upon creating your account, you will be assigned a specific URL. You might think of URLs as no biggie but they actually serve a purpose. You can enter chat rooms just by typing in their URLs. You can also share your chat room by sending out your URL to your friends or random strangers.
Going back, how do you exactly create an account on this website? Simple! You just have to input your preferred username, email address, password, birthday, and click join. You will be directed to a page where you can set up your profile picture and gender. However, you can skip those steps and do it later if you prefer.
An even faster way of registering is through Facebook. You can just simply sign up via Facebook which automatically links your account to the chat site, and you are good to go.
You can send gifts and private messages to other members
You must upgrade to premium to view other's live video broadcast in fullscreen
One on one conversations are rare since the site mainly works on a "video-conference" set up
One on one conversations isn't really the main hook of Tinychat. It thrives on group conversations, video conferences, and other interactive ways of meeting groups of people. For starters, you can't view other members' profiles unless you've upgraded to a premium package. However, it isn't that big of a deal since you can still send them private messages.
The main way you get to see other members is to enter chat rooms and participate in the group broadcast. You can broadcast yourself via video, audio, text, or all three, depending on which medium you are the most comfortable with.
What Tinychat sells is the experience of buying gifts, sending gifts, raising your "cool points," and promoting your room to go into the most coveted position, the Live Directory. All these special features are made to be cohesive and tailor your exclusive Tinychat experience.
One thing about this chat platform is how well thought-out their special features are and how these are integrated well in their ecosystem. Their features are interconnected to provide users with a fun way of connecting. But we'll get to that later.
Tinychat functions almost in a caste-like system where statuses are given high importance. Premium members have indicators such as badges--depending on your availed premium package. This means that Tinychat Pro users have different badges from Tinychat Extreme and Gold members.
Members also promote their rooms in order to be featured in the Live Directory. There is a section in it where users with the most "cool points" are featured. Status symbols are truly made to appear important on this site with the distinction of badges and featured chat rooms.
While there is enough usability left for standard accounts, Tinychat positions "status" and "exclusivity" in its premium packages. To raise your status on this website, you must have a premium account. These privileges entice young people who crave popularity and love the hustle to the top of the Live Directory Page.
In a seamless way of incorporating the 90s element of chat rooms and modern aesthetic, Tinychat is a satisfying sight to behold for the younger demographic. It is modern yet remains charmingly nostalgic. Fun but not cheap and gimmicky. This site screams "youth" to everyone who will deign to visit.
The navigation on the website is much more simple and minimalistic compared to the pop art feels of its mobile app counterpart. However, both the website and the mobile app's artsy buttons, texts, and design layouts still retain its integrity and intuitive navigation. Although Tinychat has a lot of elements in it, never did it look noisy and cluttered.
This is the feature that separates free accounts from premium ones. Tinychat Extreme and Tinychat Gold premium packages are given coins monthly whereas Tinychat Pro and standard accounts aren't. These coins are used to buy gifts from the virtual store either for yourself or for other users.
Points are also important. A "cool icon" is shown next to the user's nickname depending on his or her point level. Every virtual gift has corresponding gift points. You receive points by sending and receiving gifts. When you have enough gift points, you’ll unlock a special achievement icon! This can serve as a status symbol and increase your chance of getting featured in the Live Directory.
Promote a Room
To promote your room, you must pay 500 coins. These coins are only available for Tinychat Extreme and Tinychat Gold subscriptions. Tinychat Gold users are given 2,000 coins at the start of their subscription and receive 2,000 coins every month their subscription is successfully renewed.
You can buy virtual gifts for yourself, your current friends, and people you may want to meet in the "Virtual Store." The store sells themed gifts ranging from seasonal ones such as Halloween to food and drinks, gold and jewels, animal friends, and so many more. You can even buy membership upgrades here. You can use money, Tinychat coins, and points for purchasing items. The more gifts you buy and receive, the higher your social status is.
Live Directory is where you see live chat rooms. The chat rooms featured are the ones most promoted, near your location, and people who have the most "gifts." To be featured in the Live Directory is one of the milestones in this website. Once you are on the top spot, this increases your popularity even more.
Tinychat retains to its theme of making something old anew with its vibrant mobile app. Available on iOS and Android mobile, this site brings chat rooms and video conferencing to the younger generation with the youthful way it presents itself and its features to their target audience.
The background is artsy and vibrant with its usage of funky, bright colors. It does "fun" so well in a way that Tinychat's mobile app does not come across as cheap or immature. Although the user interface is not that simple, opting for a fancier look compared to simple usability, it is still fairly intuitive for their young market.
In fact, Tinychat drives the point that it is made for the teens and young adults instead of the, well, older adults by creating a colorful space for them which they can enjoy and express themselves.
"Tinychat is an amazing site. I had fun with it. Even though the premium subscriptions are really pricey, you don't really need to pay to actually use this site. Their paid services are just there if you are feeling extra or if you just have money to burn. Other than that, I can join rooms, talk to people, and do things just fine. I also like how the chatrooms are topical. Like, dude, there are rooms for makeup, boys, fashion. But there are also rooms for parental abuse, depression, and sex. Like, anything you can think of under the sun is there. Plus, like, I really love the way Tinychat looks. I feel connected to people even if I am alone in my room."
There are three different types of premium packages in Tinychat that offer different shades of exclusivity. You may opt to choose between being billed annually or monthly in any of the three packages that suit your needs best. Subscription is auto-renewed. However, there is no need to worry since you can cancel your subscription anytime.
Blending the old with the new, Tinychat brings back chat rooms and makes it appealing for younger audiences in a retrofuturistic manner. The site does not only look smart and aesthetically pleasing, but it also has niche topics specifically targeting the "Instagram generation" such as makeup, sexuality, games, music, and so much more. You can join any room and participate in the group conversation right away, whether in a video, audio, chat, or all three. Even if you are not inclined to talk to others, you can simply just listen in to other people talking--almost like a podcast.
There is enough usability for free accounts. In fact, the one thing we've noticed about this site is how it is actually very generous with its features. The three premium packages are only there to give you the "luxury" experience such as seeing broadcasts in HD fullscreen, Tinychat coins, and badges among other things. Aside from that, you can essentially access the chat rooms of the site with no problem.
Tinychat relies heavily on Flashplayer which makes the video broadcasts and webcam integration really seamless. It does not hurt that this chat site's user interface is so easy to learn, too. Tinychat won't let me use my Mac's iSight to broadcast.
This is because you have some kind of third-party camera software installed such as Google video chat, Manycam, Webcammax, etc. Uninstall these programs and then do the following:
Open Finder and select your main HD.
Find the “Library” folder and click enter.
Find the “Quicktime” folder and click enter.
Delete any “.component” files that have something to do with the programs listed above
Close and reopen your browser
Go to any Tinychat room and try to broadcast
Every time I go to a Tinychat room, it shows a black screen with a Tinychat logo.

The moderators highly recommend using Firefox or Google Chrome. However, no matter what browser you use, Tinychat always runs a little bit better on an updated browser.
