Our Review:

Clover Review September 2020

Clover is a mobile dating app that "has the simplicity of Tinder with the science of Match.com", according to their press deck. It was launched in 2014 by CEO and founder Isaac Raichyk. It has a special feature that lets users arrange dates in as quick as two clicks. Users can exclude others from contacting them not just through blocking, but through criteria like their age, gender, or location. It currently has 3 million total users.

Signing up

Clover Login
  • Create an account in less than 2 minutes
  • Can be through Facebook or email
  • You have to state your intention
  • Only one photo needed - can be taken on the spot, uploaded from your phone, through Facebook, or through Instagram

Your intention can be "looking for people to chat with", "looking for new friends", "looking for dating", or "looking for long-term". If you sign in through your email, you have to provide your basic information before you can proceed in using the site. If you chose the Facebook option, we imagine that your the basic details would just be automatically imported into your account. Usernames can be up to 50 characters but that's not advisable because it could be annoying for other users. Overall, you have to provide your:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Orientation
  • Intention
  • Height
  • Ethnicity
  • Occupation
  • School
  • Show distance (yes/no)

But none of these are mandatory. Clover only states that providing more information improves the quality of your matches.

Profile Information

Clover Profile
Clover 20 Answers
  • Multiple photos can be viewed for free
  • Unlike most dating apps, profiles are not swiped on
  • You can "Play 20 Questions", "Request a Date", or "Recommend to a Friend"
  • See the Chatrooms (called Mixers) someone has joined

True to their "we are not like other dating apps" theme, Clover profiles are not swiped left or right, but clicked on. On profiles, you'll see a user's location, gender, intention, height, ethnicity, occupation, and more. There are three options below that: the first one being that you can play 20 questions with the user, which means you can compare each other's answers. If they haven't played it yet, you can "ask" them to with one click of a button. You can request a date just by suggesting a time and place, and get notified if the other person confirms. As simple as that. Lastly, you can recommend a profile to a friend and it well send as a text message.

Contacting Members

Clover Chatscreen
Clover Chat
  • Account validation required to see suggested matches
  • Free messaging only for users who like each other
  • All other methods of messaging require a premium membership
  • You'll see the thumbnails of users who "boosted" their profiles on top of your chat screen

To see the suggested matches in your area, you have to validate/verify your account. You can validate your account through an SMS code or through your app store account. Though tedious for some, this is actually a good call because it reduces spam and fake profiles. The only type of free messaging you can use is when you and another user like each other, similar to Tinder. But if you pay for a premium subscription, you can message anyone regardless of like status. There are still other ways of communicating with another user: adding them as a favorite (they'll be notified), playing 20 questions with them, or straight up requesting for a date.

Special Features

Clover On Demand Dating
Clover Mixers
Clover 20 Questions

On Demand Dating

This feature is the one that sets Clover apart from other dating apps. For the more popular apps, the most common complaint are people who seem to be there just to browse profiles without any intention of meeting up, and people who "ghost" on others mid-conversation. Clover aims to end these problems, and for the most part, they've succeeded. With this feature, you can browse through the profiles of people who have turned on this option and just choose between "I'm interested" or "No thanks". If you're interested, you can either suggest a time or place, or let the other user do it. That's it. You just need a confirmation, and you've got a date. No more beating around the bush, no more awkward segues.

Mixers are basically chat rooms or events that have a common theme. Some of the existing ones are "Serious Relationships Only", "Healthy Lifestyle", "90s babies", "Fitness Singles", and more. All the existing mixers are available on a separate tab and you can join any of them for free. Once you're in a Mixer, you can invite other users in. Since most of the popular mixers have upwards of 50,000 members, they will not be good ways of discovering other users. An alternative would be to find mixers with a smaller number of members, or create your own and invite others. There are no limits to topics, so you can be as specific or creative as you want. You can use a Mixer to plan an event with other members or to just chat with a large group of people.

20 Questions

The common flirting game has been brought to life in the digital realm by Clover. To start with, you are presented with two cards labeled with contrasting personality traits (e.g predictable vs spontaneous, intelligence vs. good looks, book smart vs. street mart, etc.) and you just have to select which one applies to you. Your 20 answers can be seen by others and you can see everyone else's as well. Playing this is optional, but it is a fun way to show your personality to the public and to get a glimpse of other people's personalities even without talking to them. 20 questions isn't a one-time game. You can keep replaying and get a different set of questions each time.

Users also have to pay 0.99 USD if they want to change their names. The prices for the premium subscriptions are remarkably high, even against dating apps in the same field. The additional features you get are run-of-the-mill premium features that are commonly offered by other, cheaper apps. The boosting of profiles isn't even included in the package. If you pay through your app store account, Clover uses a protocol called Secure Sockets Layer (SSL/TLS) for your privacy to make sure that any personal information is scrambled when it's sent from the app to the company.

As a dating app, Clover is as good as people are making it out to be. It's rising above the rest with its unique features while still maintaining the ease-of-use. The app will get you a date, 100%. If anything doesn't go according to plan, it's just because of human factors at this point. The app looks clean, modern, and pleasing to the eyes. The functions are easy to navigate through, and most of the features are intuitive. The only issue (and unfortunately it's a big issue) is that the premium prices are really high, even compared to the prices of its # 1 rival, Tinder Gold. This would be understandable if the premium features were groundbreaking, but they're just similar to the add-ons provided by cheaper apps. Its most distinguishing feature, On Demand Dating, is available for free, so it makes us wonder what the point of the sky-high prices are.
